Stevee: Hi guys looking good
canblade08: hello:D
Stevee: heycanB08
greencreek65: you ain't seen a pic of me after being up since yesterday morning
canblade08: :O8o
greencreek65: good evening shuks
Stevee: Good evening Tony
shuks: Good evening all.
canblade08: good evening
bjnbear: good to see you guys. i was able to make it after all. Mr. Bose, honored to be here with you...........all you other knot heads as well
greencreek65: lisa how is every thing at the factory going
shuks: Hey old dog
Stevee: Thanks Mr bear
Tony_Bose: Good Evening I''m here to answer questions so...
greencreek65: good evening mr bose.
canblade08: Welcome Mr Bose
shuks: what's new coming up tony
Tony_Bose: i have submitted the colaboartation knife to case for 2010. Can't tell what it is but you're gonna like it
Tony_Bose: What do you think of the Norfolk?
Stevee: now thats a tease
bjnbear: at least a hint???
canblade08: Love it!!! It's a beauty!!
greencreek65: COME ON JUST A HINT..LOVE THE NORFOLK
shuks: it' kewl
Stevee: great knife
bjnbear: the norfolk is a sweet looking knife, haven't had a chance to hold one yet
Tony_Bose: HInt: has one blade and is 4 inches long
Stevee: sounds like a russlock oboy
greencreek65: WAS VERY HONORED TO MEET YOU FOR THE SECOND YEAR AT SMKW IN JUNE LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU AGAIN AND CHATTING..
bjnbear: well i guess that is hint enough......now to sit back and wonder
shuks: a smaller Arkansas hunter.
Tony_Bose: It is something that I made several years ago. Haven't made many and someone posted a picture of it recently...and it has just took off.
Stevee: Tony is the steel going to be the same are what
bjnbear: Tony just curious, but where do you get the inspiration for your knives?
Tony_Bose: 154-CM steel is correct
Stevee: great
bjnbear: how did you become involved with Case?
bjnbear: hello old triple son, glad to see you join us
Tony_Bose: i'be collected antique pocket knvies for 40 years and I have studied them for as many years. In my opinion, folks don't invent new knives rather they bring them back from the grave. You can't hardly do anything that has not been done in the past. I like older, interesting patterns that you just can't no longer buy at the hardware store.
TSAR: I'm here-didn't think I would be.
canblade08: Welcome Ron
Stevee: well you have done a fine job of it tony
shuks: Lo Ron
psupug: me too
4ever3: Whats up old dog?
Tony_Bose: I was sitting around one Sunday and Eddie Jessup called me. Mark Zaleski from Knife Forum was doing a story and they asked him who was making traditional knives. The response was to "seek out Tony Bose."
bjnbear: Thanks Tony, that being said, it would seem you have a lot to draw from
canblade08: Tony, who are your favorite custom knife makers?
Stevee: my favorite is the cotton sampler
Sissylynn: Cool, I finally found you guys
canblade08: Welcome Sissylynn
shuks: hey sissy
greencreek65: HELLO SISSY
Sissylynn: Hello to all
jaybedog: this is my first time here
bjnbear: Well, I for one am glad they found you and you got hooked up. Got to tell you the sway back is a winner and the small horn has been one of my favorites, I even kind of like that pig they put in the vault
Tony_Bose: There is a lot of old antique knives to choose from. I've been privilieged to have known some very knowledgable men who know knives...and I was smart enough to shut up and listen t them.
psupug: amen
Sissylynn: Me too I was on vacation for the first one.
bjnbear: trouble is most of us aren't as smart
jaybedog: double amen
bjnbear: hello sissylynn, good to see you
Stevee: and no talent
Tony_Bose: I was always fond of the work of Jess Horn. He makes very clean knives that are a real man's knife.
Pocket_Worn: hi there legendary knife maker
Sissylynn: U 2 bk
Sissylynn: bj
shuks: .o John
bjnbear: Pocket_Worn we are honored you chose to join us tonight
shuks: l
psupug: he must be talking to Tony, I am legendary knife spender
4ever3: Congratulations on the Norfolk Tony
Stevee: tony did jess horn make the larger are the smaller one
bjnbear: hey 4E3, just now noticed you
jaybedog: TONY I HAVE HEARD THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER TAKING ORDERS FOR KNIVES
Tony_Bose: He made all different size knives and in the past he has made some traditional knives.
TSAR: Yes the Norfolk is awesome, expensive but awesome. Tony do you know if the original Norfolk exists in a museum somewhere or in a collection?
Stevee: Thanks cool
Tony_Bose: True. I have no longer taken orders for 2-3 years.
bjnbear: Ron, have you been hiding it??
TSAR: I wish I was.
Sissylynn: Mr Bose I want to tell you again what an honor it was to meet you at the SMKW event in June.
Tony_Bose: Good taste IS EXPENSIVE. The original is in a museum in England.
bjnbear: Tony, is it true that your son does?
greencreek65: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FROM START TO FINISH ON A KNIFE YOU BUILD..
TSAR: so it exist-Wow-I thought it might-thank you.
Tony_Bose: Depends on if it has 1 or 6 blades?
Tony_Bose: One -2 blades takes 3 days
Tony_Bose: 5-6 blades takes a week+
4ever3: how did you miss me bj :P
jaybedog: THAT IS MAGIC
Tony_Bose: They are not for rookies!
bjnbear: Interesting question creek. normall from concept to mass production
Pocket_Worn: tony, what's your favorite knife to build?
shuks: Tony I really enjoyed your demostration last year at the Celebration in Bradford. Will you be doing another next year?
greencreek65: OK THANK'S..AIN'T NO KNIFE BUILDER ,JUST A KNIFE BUYER..
psupug: :D
Tony_Bose: Sway Backs, Wharncliffe Trappers, Saddlehorns,& BackPocket Knife (I like them all, not in order of favorite). I really never really met a knife that I did not like.
jaybedog: I AM HAVING A HARD TIME WAITING FOR THE NEW NORFOLK
bjnbear: Jeremy, let's just say I am a bad shot. saw sissylynn and gave her a shout out without looking further........or being here with Tony and John makes me nervous....take yer pick
Tony_Bose: My favoite knife is the Wharncliffe Trapper. I alsways carry one in my pocket.
shuks: That's my problem.
4ever3: but what about the Sowbelly :)
Tony_Bose: Been that way for over 20 years...me and my Wahrncliffe. Does everythign you need to do in a days work.
Tony_Bose: Soowbelly is a good pattern. I'd like a Sowbelly Trapper (2-blades).
Stevee: How far behinh is your son on oders
bjnbear: Tony, is the desk knife an adaptation from the Wharncliffe??
Tony_Bose: I don't know. Probably 4-5 years.
4ever3: Thats what I'm talkin about !
Stevee: AHHHHHHHHh
psupug: worth a wait//I am sure:)
bjnbear: Tony have Case drag that belly outta the vault and make some 2 blades. 4E3 and I will take a couple:P
Pocket_Worn: Cool idea bjn!
Tony_Bose: When I first made it, it was made with a Wharncliffe Blade. These were made by almost every company in the past since they double as a knife and letter opener. I'm glad to see Case is making one. It is a take-off of the Sway Back knife. They are handy all of the time.
jaybedog: TONY HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF ADDING A LOCK TO YOUR WHARNCLIFF TRAPPER
bjnbear: gladja like it P_W
shuks: John you can make it happen.
Pocket_Worn: maybe...if enough folks think it's a good idea.
psupug: I'm in....
Tony_Bose: If someone needs a lock, I'd suggest a fixed blade with a sheath.
bjnbear: Tony, the desk knife is a real honey. got the Pearl on back order. can't wait.
shuks: I'll take 2.
Stevee: great anser tony
bjnbear: Hear that Jeremy, shuks and pug are in, met to or three even
knife_junky: If you build it they will come.
TSAR: That's what I say-if u need a lock you aren't useing your knife properly.
bjnbear: who needd money, buy more knives
psupug: ron ron ron:o)
Tony_Bose: I think you are right. Like the best of both worlds: Trapper + Sowbelly!
TSAR: jack, jack, jack:o):P
4ever3: Thats what I'm talkin about
bjnbear: a two blade sowbelly with a wharncliffe blade, the stuff dreams are made of:favorite:
Sissylynn: Trapper + Sowbelly :favorite:
bjnbear: 4E3 if sissylynn will be cheerleader, i will coach and you can quarterback
Stevee: tony on the new one coming out - handle material - any diff.
shuks: with 2 warnnie blades
Sissylynn: LOL
Pocket_Worn: tony,
Tony_Bose: You can't put a Wharncliffe Blade in a Sowbelly. When closed it will stick up too far and be unforfortable in your hand.
TSAR: I like the sow-gots a TB Stag sow right next to me but I'd prefer two blades so it be thinner and lighter.
Pocket_Worn: wbat's the toughest knife for you to make?
bjnbear: shuks, now you are just greedy, but i likes it
4ever3: Bare head with Ebony scales, Sowbelly shield and a fluted bolster... Hows that grab you?
Tony_Bose: Handle mateiral expected to be the same as the past.
Stevee: thanks i
TSAR: grabs me right by the bolsters
canblade08: :-):-):-)
Tony_Bose: Toughest knife = Lockback Whittler
bjnbear: cool the chestnut and antique are always good choices
Stevee: why tony
Tony_Bose: Those are great bone colors
bjnbear: lock back whittler, missed fire sale on that one still hanging my head over it
Tony_Bose: Absolutely zero tolerance to make it work. It was Case's "Crowning Achievement" when they made the Locback Whittler. Job WELL DONE!!!!!!!
greencreek65: YOUR NOT BY YOURSELF ON THE LOCK BACK WHITTLER:-(
bjnbear: got this year's antique saddlehorn, and it it a dandy :o)
Pocket_Worn: my favorite too
Tony_Bose: tHEY ARE REAL HARD TO FIND RIGHT NOW. bEEN GOBBLED UP.
Stevee: tell me about it :-(
Tony_Bose: Glad you like it.
Joe_Brown: What new for 2010 stag saddlehorns
jaybedog: IT IS THE CENTER PIECE OF MY COLLECTION
bjnbear: I was real privileged to see that one at Norris in '05. I was fairly new to collecting. If I only knew then what I know not, but I guess that is true for most of us.
Tony_Bose: What other knives would you like to see made?
greencreek65: IF SOME ONE WILL SEND ME A PIC OF IT AT LEAST I'LL HAVE SOME TO LOOK AT..
Blademon: Whittlers of all sorts
Joe_Brown: Any thing with a stag hasndle
jaybedog: THE 6380 WHITTLER
bjnbear: Tony have you considered a lock back trapper
Blademon: Yummy
Tony_Bose: I am not sure what handle materials are being offered on the Saddlehorn for 2010? It will be a surprise for us all.
Sissylynn: Hi Blademon
bjnbear: do you know if Case would ever consider bringing back the Lockhorn?
Blademon: Hi sweety
Stevee: hey tony what about the tang - we wont tell
Tony_Bose: A lockback knife is not one of my favorites.
TSAR: Tony I'd like a barehead large coke bottle [many antigues are like that] and would love to see you do something special with a master barlow
Tony_Bose: Lockhorn, that would be up to Case. John?
Tony_Bose: Tang...no can do
greencreek65: :-(
bjnbear: I gathered that from your earlier comment. and TSAR makes a good point anyway about not needing a lock if used properly. oh well.:?
Stevee: Humbug
Tony_Bose: A Barehead Large Coke Bottle is called a Beavertail.
Blademon: Slap slap
Pocket_Worn: we've thought about the lockhorn some...i think it was a knife before it's time when it was originally introduced back in around 1980 i think? of course i'm partial to it because I had the chance to work with tom hart- the designer..he also created our copperlock and russlocks
bjnbear: Heck if the hunt is half the fun, I guess anticipation is the other half.
Tony_Bose: Spose it is
TSAR: Beavertail it is-I see many antique knives in that configuartion-they look sweet-I own a couple-Jeremy might have one I can't remember if it is.
Pocket_Worn: i wish tony had the chance to meet tom...they both have/had the same passion for knife making.
Blademon: That'd be a goodun no doubt
4ever3: Yep, remember, you got tired of me crying so you sent it to me :D
Tony_Bose: I'm going to be at a Case event in Holly Springs, Ms this Saturday. Hope some of you will be stopping by. Going a day early to attend a Club meeting. Looking forward to it.
TSAR: I have a lockhorn, thanks to Knife Junky-I like it.
bjnbear: Thanks John. I think it would do well seeing how the older versions are doing.
Stevee: tony i will see you at shcc
TSAR: Jeremy when your knees hit the floor and you said 'please' I just had to give it up
TSAR: but I couldn't remember tthe knife exactly
Tony_Bose: Terrible to watch a grown man "beg"
4ever3: and the tears too, don't forget the tears.
TSAR: :-)
psupug: :-(:-(
Blademon: Have ya talked about the Norfolk tonite?
Joe_Brown: I wish I could go to Holly Springs, But Tony I did meet you at the Badle show in Atlanta, ga.
bjnbear: sometime a grown made has to just suck it up, do what needs to be done, can't stand on pride when yer a beggin
Tony_Bose: What would you like to know?
Blademon: Badle show8o
Sissylynn: I wish I could go 2 but 2 far.
jaybedog: DO YOU KNOW WHEN CASE IS GOING TO RELEASE THEM?
psupug: john, we want a Tony Bose stag Sodbuster...8o
Blademon: How they are moving...being bought up or what?
TSAR: Tony and Pocketworn if you ever get near Rochester NY you must go to the Farmington Antigue mall-some of the knives there [though often well used] are just incredible for old, obsolete and/or forgotten patterns.
Pocket_Worn: i know the first bone versions are in production right now...hoping to have some to ship maybe by end of july...or early august.
Tony_Bose: I think Case is now beginning (or are real close)to ship them. The wait won't be long now. Maybe when we chat in the future, you can share more thougths.
Blademon: The Norfolks...
TSAR: Pocket
Pocket_Worn: thanks TSAR...i'll have to head that direction
4ever3: Whats on your bench that your working on Tony?
Tony_Bose: I'd like to go to Rocherster and see that.
Joe_Brown: If it stag Sodbuster and I afford it. I buy one. I could never afford the norfolk
TSAR: Pocket Worn-I understand the next batch of Arctic Ice won't be made until August-when will they ship?
bjnbear: Pocket_Worn, kind of off the beaten path, but do you think there is a chance of another gatherig in Norris in the not too distant future, say a year or two??
Tony_Bose: Just finished a 3 5/8" 1-blade Sway Back in a Shadow Pattern. Real workhorse of a knife.
TSAR: YW
Blademon: Kewl
4ever3: What scales?
bjnbear: When we chat in the future........that mean yer a coming back to visit with us Old Dog??:help:
bjnbear: A Shadow Back. I'm in. :P
Blademon: Me too
Tony_Bose: Green canvas Micarta with a shield in it
Blademon: Lovely man!
TSAR: THAT SOUNDS REAL NICE
greencreek65: OH YEA
shuks: Oh yeah.
bjnbear: Ooh, ooh. maybe two.B)B)
Sissylynn: Cool
Stevee: yo TONY
4ever3: Sweeeet
bjnbear: that would make a dandy toter.
Pocket_Worn: i know we have more arctic in works...not sure...and we're working on event ideas...but no immediate plans for norris yet...though both times there have been great!
Blademon: Time fer production Tony...the votes in!
TSAR: Thanks PW.
Pocket_Worn: tony...what blade steel do you like the best
Pocket_Worn: ?
Joe_Brown: will there be any more events , before 2010, that are not on the events list known.
bjnbear: Thanks P_W. Norris would be cool. I really enjoyed the time spent there.
Tony_Bose: CPM44V Tool Steel is my favorite to use. It is pretty tough steel and holds a VERY GOOD edge. As in any tool steel, the secret is in proper heat treating.
bjnbear: I would like to see that in a Sway Back.
Blademon: Yes
bjnbear: Or 2 blade belly.:P
TSAR: is cpm44v more costly than say 154??
4ever3: yeah, what bj said
Stevee: I would like that on a cotton sampler
Tony_Bose: I am not sure if it is even made any longer. I have secured enough for my own personal use for the rest of my career.
Sissylynn: or 2 blade belly
TSAR: ok-thanks
bjnbear: Stevee you gonna have to chop a lotta cotton.
TSAR: :-(
Stevee: na just sample it
canblade08: :-):-):-)
Tony_Bose: Yes, CPM44V defininatley costs more. Everything about it is harder...to work, to saw, to grind, to drill...just to plain work with.
TSAR: thanks
bjnbear: how is it for corrosion resistance Tony?
Tony_Bose: Oops...my finger slipped. I meant to type CPM440V.
Stevee: tony do you rest any or is it blow and go all the time
Tony_Bose: It is pretty good for corrosion resistance.
Tony_Bose: Blow and go all the time!
Blademon: Aint it dry enuf in Texas, let alone eatin cotton Stevee
Tony_Bose: If you could do this, wouldn't you want to?
Pocket_Worn: is that what mrs. bose would say?
4ever3: cept for when he's spittin and whittling
bjnbear: darn I had when that happens. usually when my finger slips one of them Bose blades nicks it and I bleeeeed.
psupug: >:-D
Stevee: cotton candy is dandy
Blademon: i agree
Tony_Bose: I enjoy sitting on the back porch and whittlin' during the evening hours.
Blademon: I enjoy carving myself
greencreek65: MR BOSE WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME..
Tony_Bose: I whittle and talk to to "my little dumplin' AKA my wife.
Pocket_Worn: tony..it is pretty darned cool to be able to turn your love of knives into a career.
Pocket_Worn: of course it took a lot of guts too
Tony_Bose: I call home Wilfred, IN.
psupug: yes what talent...
Joe_Brown: pocket worn what kind of event ideas are woking on?
TSAR: I never did much whittlin, I think it is cool tho. When I make chips I use a chainsaw, cause chip making is all I'm good at:D
bjnbear: Don't sound like that leaves much time for chatting. Thanks for taking it to spend with us.
Sissylynn: yeah that is the coolest thing
jaybedog: WE APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH THANKS
bjnbear: Chip making........that why they call you tater?:-):-):-):-)
Tony_Bose: It does take luck. To quit your job and go full time took a lot of guts. I was one of the lucky ones...it has worked. I did it and never looked back.
TSAR: TATER SALAD
Blademon: I wanna be like you when i grow up Tony!:)
Pocket_Worn: just starting to plan next year Joe...what would you like to see?
bjnbear: I don't wanna grow up if it is any different from this.
greencreek65: YOU HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB,AT DOING WHAT WE ALL LOVE KNIVES..
shuks: John we want another event at the Bradford plant.
Tony_Bose: I'll be there if you have one. The event last year was a BLAST.
Stevee: and what beautys they are
psupug: yes it was:D
Tony_Bose: I like the people in Bradford. It is great to go up there.
shuks: Tony if we have one you need to come to the forum dinner.
TSAR: I enjoyed meeting you there TB and if anyone didn't have a bast at that event it was their own darn fault-what a riot.
bjnbear: John, just curious. How production? Is it picking up any? I worry like most here about our friends who have been idlde.
greencreek65: I'M GOING TO BE THEIR IN 2010 ..EVEN IF I HAVE TO WALK
Joe_Brown: I like to see you all back at U.G. white and the Atlanta Badge show, because I live close to these locations. also, I like to see a class on how to buff and clean a knife.
Tony_Bose: I would have went last time, if you'd invited me!
Stevee: opps
psupug: that will change Tony u r invited
TSAR: I think-how to sharpen a knife' would be welcome by many, many people.
bjnbear: There you go shuks. no excuses this time.
shuks: I met him outside the diner last year.
shuks: He was close.
bjnbear: Tony, is it better to use oil on a stone. I have heard different opinions.
Tony_Bose: I can teach folks how to do that. Maybe it would be fun to do at an event? A little Show & Tell.
canblade08: that would be great!
greencreek65: OH YEAH..
bjnbear: Sounds like Show & Tell time to me. Whoo Hoo!!
Tony_Bose: If you have an oil stone, you need to use oil on it (like an India Stone). If you use a Diamond Stone, use it dry.
shuks: Ya'll missed a great blade grinding demo last year.
TSAR: TB Someone should because many still struggle to do it by hand and mainly because looking at a picture in a book and never seeing it done by someone else is confusing-trial and error can be very frustrating for some.
greencreek65: MR BOSE I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME TO CHAT WITH US,AND JOIN US ON THE FORUM ANY TIME .I'M JUST GOING TO SIT AND READ Y'ALL HAVE A GOOD EVENING..
bjnbear: Thanks Tony, I have some old bench stones my dad left me and would like to treat them the way they deserve to be treated.
Joe_Brown: You are right Tsar, I never be able to look at pictures and get it right.
Tony_Bose: Most people learn most easily if someone shows them how to do it properly, with the right equipment. I had to self-teach myself along with my friend Kenny "Bug-eyes" Malone. Remember the story about him?
Pocket_Worn: hand grinding blades is really the difference with a custom maker
shuks: Jack if we get many more for the forum dinner we may need a bigger place;);)
psupug: we are already looking Gerald
TSAR: Goodnight Green. Marshall I have a couple stones from the 1800s, still quite useable
Tony_Bose: He taught me when I was 7 or 8 years old.
TSAR: I don't know the story
Joe_Brown: What is the best kind of buffer to use on a knife, to polish it.
Tony_Bose: Anyone can learn the mechanics of a knife. Grinding comes form the soul. You just have to belly up there and DO IT. You have to be able to predict what you are going to do, then do it again. It takes
Tony_Bose: It takes a lot of practice.
bjnbear: Yep, Ron the old ones are special. No telling what kind of knives my dad's have seen.
Tony_Bose: I don't use buffers. I do all hand finishing. The blades that I grind either have a ground finish or a hand rubbed finish. I don't polish blades.
Blademon: This months Knife World has an excellent article on building a Scagel kit kinife
Joe_Brown: Ok, how do you do a hand rudded finish ? What kind of polish you put on it?
4ever3: there is soul in an as ground knife blade
Blademon: Kudos Jeremy
Tony_Bose: Before I head out, I will be stopping at a few other events this year...Lebanon, MO (SHC) on September 12th, Radcliff, KY (Red Hill Cutlery) September 26th, and Richmond, KY (Bluegrass Ace Hardware) on November 7th. Hope the dates are right.
bjnbear: Tony, talking earlier about the Norfolk. Is the Humpback a variant? Looks like it could be.
bjnbear: Jeremy, there is a lot of sweat in it too.
bjnbear: Tony would love to see you on the extreme southern swing of the tour sometime.
TSAR: Tony-have you ever handled a 'Richtig' knife and if so, was it as special as some say they are??
Tony_Bose: Humpback actually came after the Norfolk. It was made for the 1852 Exposition at the Crystal Palace in England.
shuks: Tony thanks coming by to chat with us . C U later.
TSAR: bye Shuks
Sissylynn: later shuks
Pocket_Worn: bye shuks
Tony_Bose: I have handled a 'Richtig' knife. It was a very utility knife.
Tony_Bose: Looks like the time has flown by.
TSAR: Thanks
Tony_Bose: Any last minute questions?
Stevee: it always does when your having fun
canblade08: It has been a real treat listening in Tony Thanks.
Tony_Bose: You folks are great.
Joe_Brown: Thank you for the good information about hand ruding
Blademon: Thnx Tony, good nite fellasO:-D
4ever3: Talk to you later TBose
TSAR: Nope but I'm looking forward to our next chat or visit
bjnbear: Before you have to fly. Thanks for coming by.
Sissylynn: LOL was just typing that canblade
canblade08: :-)
Sissylynn: Tony thanks for joining us in the chat tonight.
TSAR: Canblade reads minds.

canblade08: See the rest of you on the forum...:D
bjnbear: Thanks to you as well Pocket_Worn and for Case allowing us to do it.
Stevee: we know you wont
shuks: What Marshall said.
Pocket_Worn: thanks to all of you...good night!
bjnbear: Tony you haven't let us down yet and neither has Case. A great collaboration if ever was one>
